Aajibaichi Shala is a school for grandmothers on the outskirts of Mumbai. It was set up in 2016, after some of the women in the village complained they couldn’t take part in public readings during religious festivals. The 39 women, most of whom are widows, go to lessons every afternoon between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The women say getting an education has changed their lives, and made their families proud.
Many older Indian women missed out on an education when they were young, but for one group of grandmothers, aged between 60 and 90, the dream of going to school is finally becoming a reality.
