NEWS DEEPLY : COMMUNITY FELLOW PROGRAM – FALL SEMESTER

News Deeply builds networks of passionate communities that allow key stakeholders to engage and exchange valuable insights. Our knowledge-driven platforms serve as the go-to hub for each topic, bringing together influencers in an immersive content experience that includes articles, videos, newsletters, data and research, community conversations and events.

The News Deeply community fellowship program offers an opportunity to work with the community editors of each Deeply platform on mapping, growing and strengthening our community of key stakeholders (policymakers, academics, corporates, NGOs and journalists). You will hone your research know-how, dive deep into your topic of interest and learn a range of new skills and strategies that help community-centered journalism thrive. This unpaid fellowship program will start early October and run over 10-12 weeks. Fellows will work remotely and should plan to commit 10-15 hours per week.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Day-to-day :
    • Research and build profiles of relevant experts by parsing reports, articles and other information related to their expertise and reputations
    • Monitor our media partners for articles we might want to republish and topics we are missing
  • Potential longer-term projects:
    • Update our background articles
    • Help produce our signature community formats Experts to Watch and Expert Views
    • Build promotion plans for special editorial projects and series

REQUIREMENTS

  • Third-year college student or higher
  • College credit is a plus, but not required
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in the relevant Deeply topic
  • Research and, ideally, writing/journalism experience
  • Foreign language is a plus, especially as relevant to a specific platform (Arabic, for instance, if interested in Syria Deeply)

MENA Media & Policy Research Assistant - Beirut (part time, project based)

News Deeply is seeking a Research Assistant to work with its team to complete a project with a Beirut-based client in the media and policy space.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct research related to a project exploring media focused on policy in the Middle East North Africa region
  • Create high level map of the landscape, including research institutes, publications, events, social influencers, thought leaders, and the key themes/topics they cover
  • Support identification of gaps and opportunities for new entrants
  • Attend client workshops in Beirut and write summaries and develop insights based off of the discussion
  • Act as a full participant with the team exploring opportunities on behalf of the client

REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 3 years of work experience in research and/or related work; specific experience in policy and/or the media landscape in the region is a plus
  • Fluency in English and Arabic
  • Comfort working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Logistics

  • Project duration is 4 weeks - October 9 through November 6
  • Based in Beirut, Lebanon, but working with a team member in New York, NY
  • Time required will be roughly 10 hours / week, except for week of October 16 which may be closer to 20 hours due to client workshops October 16 - 18
  • Compensation commensurate with experience and time required

MANAGING EDITOR - MALNUTRITION AND STUNTING (Contract)

News Deeply is looking for a smart, passionate and committed Managing Editor to create and lead a temporary channel on Malnutrition and Stunting, devoted to in-depth coverage of this often forgotten area of global health. This is a full-time role contractor position for 10 months starting in mid-September. Preferred location is New York.

We started with Syria Deeply and are now scaling our platform across topics in geopolitics, the environment, health, technology and other areas of special interest. Fortune 1000 companies, think tanks, philanthropies and academic institutions work with us to access our high-value audience, our proprietary information and our community- building expertise.

In a crowded, complicated world, our hubs unite communities and surface vital information and trends, helping our readers to understand and make better decisions on the issues that matter, deeply, to the state of our world.

The Managing Editor

  • Leads the editorial direction, ensuring the channel is up-to- date and meets our goal of giving users complete understanding of malnutrition issues, including childhood nutrition and stunting.
  • Generates: background guides on childhood nutrition and stunting; data-driven insights and policy analysis; personal and community-based stories that ground the policy and research in ways that are approachable and personal; perspectives and commentaries from health analysts and practitioners around the world; multimedia stories with photo and video components
  • Helps oversee and manage freelance contributors.
  • Contributes interviews, analyses and reporting.
  • Works with the Community Editor to lead the development and management of a community of experts who are both users and contributors to the platform and events.
  • Increases audience engagement and traffic to site by actively assisting with social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.).
  • Assists with the development and delivery of events, if necessary
  • Regularly and actively contributes to an open sharing of ideas as we seek to perpetually improve our products.

Qualifications

  • Solid background (6+ years) in journalism, preferably at a major newspaper, website or magazine.
  • Advanced understanding of nutrition issues in the developing world.
  • Extremely strong writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Advanced multimedia skills desirable.

NEWS DEEPLY: COMMUNITY EDITOR, HEALTH

We are seeking a Community Manager based in New York. This person will lead audience engagement and development efforts within channels to be launched in the global and public health category. This is a high impact role, working closely with our editorial and product teams internally and with our stakeholder audience externally.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Map, grow, and strengthen our audience of policymakers, academics, corporates, NGOs, and journalists.
  • Engage the community through editorial projects (e.g., Q&As, op-eds), conversations on each platform and social media, live and virtual events, and user research.
  • Understand and translate user needs, metrics, and journeys into actionable items to be executed in conjunction with the editorial and product teams.
  • Develop and execute effective amplification and promotion efforts through social media, newsletters, and media partnerships.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 3-5 years of experience in journalism, social media, copywriting, public relations, community outreach, user research and/or data analysis.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Experience in amplifying content and engaging with expert audiences across social platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Quora.
  • Comfort with high-touch engagement with high-level stakeholders.
  • Creativity, problem solving, and grit, with ability to pick up the slack and be the glue between multiple teams.
  • Team player, with experience working with and coordinating across multiple priorities and team members in several timezones.
  • Domain experience in health issues (especially global or public health) and their respective communities is a big plus.
  • Desire to work in a high-impact environment with colleagues who are passionate to surface vital information and connect communities on the topics that matter deeply to the state of work.
  • Note: Some travel may be required.
