While we paused regular publication of the site on September 15, 2017, and transitioned some of our coverage to Oceans Deeply, we are happy to serve as an ongoing public resource on the Arctic. Paul Crowley is the vice president of Arctic conservation at WWF-Canada. A long-time resident of Nunavut, Paul joined WWF-Canada in 2014. He has worked on sustainable development in the Arctic and internationally for over 20 years. He served as principal secretary to the premier of Nunavut, Eva Aariak, and also closely supported Sheila Watt-Cloutier, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, to introduce human rights into U.N. climate negotiations. He works in Iqaluit and is a lawyer by training. In 2000, he travelled to the North Pole by dog sled.

There is work underway to develop a land-use plan for Nunavut that supports the well-being of northern communities while promoting environmental integrity. But the plan concentrates mainly on land and leaves Nunavut’s marine areas out of the discussion.
